Clean & modern desktop look (looking like a mix of Windows 7 & 10). Uses LXQt as main desktop environment, makes it one of the fastest and most responsive. Latest release a lil bit outdated, need to be updated/upgraded manually after installation (not that hard). Comes with good set of (lightweight) apps, useful for daily tasks.Ĭons. Desktop are preconfigured to display useful information like weather by default. Good “ classical/vintage” look out of the box, comes with a pack of beautiful wallpapers. Since it uses (mostly) “internet power” apps, you’ll need a good internet connection and accessibility. Everything works light and fast, yet it still maintain the aesthetic for being good looking and comfortable to use as any other modern OS.Ĭons. A great mix between traditional linux and modern web-centric apps. Make use of web apps is “efficient” and make updating process is a breeze.

It can use and “convert” web apps to act as a desktop apps. I don’t put Lubuntu & Lite in the list because they are considered “slow” compared to these distro. I picked these distro on the list because they work fast (not just “work”) on those old machines, which make it like “brand new”. They’re using a modern core with lightweight desktop environment on top of it. Machines from decade ago isn’t just “adequate”, but can be run optimally and “fast” with it.

These Linux distro are great for this kind of job, to get your old machine “back to work” and productive, without leaving the comfort and security. The “Old” Acer emachines is still running like a charm today

Let’s say that we still “keep” that old desktop (PC/laptop) from a decade ago, machine powered with Pentium 4 processor (or an early dual core processor), 1-2GB of RAM and its peripherals, which are “too weak” to run Windows 10 (and Windows 7 isn’t a good option since microsoft has stopped its support). One of the many reasons Linux is so loved is its efficiency and being “lean”, friendly to older system (hardware), yet still becoming one modern, reliable and comfortable OS to use.
